In South Africa, far more women than men were hit by this crisis. According to Statistics South Africa, the number of unemployed women and men increased by 173 000 and 53 000 respectively in the first quarter of 2011. The yearon-year comparisons reveal that, while unemployment among men showed a decrease of 102 000, among women it showed an increase of 70 000. It is not surprising to find that women, vulnerable to the risks of unemployment, have developed a strong tradition of entrepreneurship – albeit mainly in the realm of micro businesses.
