THE announcement of the fmalists for the annual Businesswoman of the Year award has set the stage for what is shaping up to be the fiercest competition yet. The awards, a partnership between the Businesswomen's Association of SA and financial services group Nedbank, recognise exceptional women in business who have specialist knowledge in their fields. Cr VA KY LANDS, MD (FOOD): WOOLWORTHS HOLDINGS LIMITED RYLANDS, born in Athlone on the Cape Flats, has risen to the summit of the corporate world as Woolworths's first female executive director. One of five children of parents in the tailoring trade, she resolved, while at high school, to be the first in her immediate family to get a degree and to qualify as a chartered accountant.
