THE number of women in senior managerial positions in the workplace is steadily increasing, but the pace needs to pick up. Philisizwe Buthelezi, CEO of the National Empowerment Fund, and chairman of Group Five, says South Africa is progressing well with gender equality in government. Findings from The Women in Leadership Census 2011, which was conducted by the Business Women's Association, showed government in 2011 comprised 56.3% women and 43.7% men. This is in stark comparison with the business sector, which is lagging. Figues from the census showed that in 2011, 70 of the companies surveyed had 25% or more board seats occupied by women directors, compared with just 51 in 2007. However, of the 25 largest JSE-listed companies by market capitalisation, only two in 2011 have 25% or more director positions held by women.
