“FOR over a decade, leading development financier, the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) has made significant progress in reducing historical inequalities and building an inclusive economy by accelerating South Africa's socioeconomic transformation,” says NEF CEO, Philisiwe Mthethwa. The NEF promotes and facilitates the inclusion of black entrepreneurs and blackowned and empowered businesses through the provision of financial and nonfinancial support, as well as by encouraging a culture of savings and investment among black people. Since operations began in 2005, the NEF has approved over R7.6 billion to 770 black entrepreneurs in a range of sectors across the country for startups, expansion and equity acquisition purposes. To date the NEF has supported in excess of 86 000 jobs, which has made a difference for well over 850 000 beneficiaries.
