GCINA Manyaka — known as Mama G — operates all five McDonald's outlets in Soweto and is one of 94 McDonald's franchisees in South Africa. “I studied for my MBA in Australia and that's where my passion started — I was a customer at a place with happy workers,” she said. “A friend, who was a McDonald's franchisee, invited my husband to look into the idea, but he wasn't keen on the nitty-gritty of running a franchise, because he was told it would involve cleaning toilets and scrubbing floors. “I spoke to the McDonald's managing director personally and he sent me the plans and the financial and operational requirements. I was told to think about it for a few months, because it was a huge responsibility.” She then worked at an outlet for three days in 2006 and was assessed on her all-round performance.
