The black empowerment portion of Prasa’s fleet renewal contract will be worth about R37bn over 20 years.
By last Thursday, 160 companies had met the deadline to purchase documents setting out the black economic empowerment requirements for the Passenger Rail Agency of SA's revamp of its commuter fleet.
Prasa has promised to make the renewal of its rolling stock, a project worth about R37bn for empowerment firms over the next two decades, a vehicle for redistribution and a means of creating black industrial enterprises.
It's an echo of the past, when the railways were used for Afrikaner empowerment and to cultivate much-needed skills, like those of artisans.
