Construction of the new energy plant on the Karbochem site began in November and continued in earnest over the festive period. Head of the strategic project fund, Zwelibanzi Sapula, said this week that the steam line connection to Karbochem has been built and the boilers and turbines, which are being manufactured in India, will be installed by August. Mr Sapula explained this will be the first power plant in South Africa to make use of the technology, which will put discarded coal through a fluidised bed combustion system to produce steam.
